The Solar Goddesses

The image of the goddess is often associated with the moon and its phases as in the feminine archetypes of maiden, mother, crone and in modern day Wicca.  However, there is a long line of goddesses around the world and in history who are associated with the power and life giving rays of the sun.  These are the solar goddesses such as Aditi, Sehkmet, Bast, Bridgid, Heekolas and many others.  Rather than representing the fertility and nurturing of the earth goddesses or the mystical power of the moon, they represent power and majesty, wielding both nurturing and destructive power - just as the sun can both help crops to grow or scorch and kill them with blinding, too hot rays.  This class will look at some of these solar goddess images and the role they have played through history.  We will also see what remains of them and their power in the world today and just what role they may play in the human unconscious.
