Poetic forms force us to put aside habit and expectation in order to extend the possibilities of the poem. This class will experiment with form by working in, against, and through a selection of poetic structures. Resistance created by writing in a form can surprise the poet by inspiring images and lines that are sharper and more powerful. Forms explored will include, the acrostic, abecedarian, and Fibonacci. Students will be asked to produce a poem each week to share with the class. Please bring pen and paper to the first class.
