As the twentieth century approached, many Europeans and Americans believed that they would continue to see the continued progress of the greatest civilization the world had ever seen - Western Civilization. However, there were some people who were uneasy about exactly where that civilization was heading. The causes of that uneasiness were the ideas of three individuals- Charles Darwin (1809-1882), Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) and Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900).  People's fears were confirmed with the outbreak of World War I (and the other horrors that followed in the 20th century). Our civilization is still haunted and has still not come to grips about what happened in the 20th century and what is still happening today. To try to understand, one cannot ignore the continuing impact of Darwin, Freud and Nietzsche.
