History of Filmmaking offers a selective overview of cinema history, and explores the basic tools for analyzing the art of film. In the course we will develop a historical appreciation of film based on a survey of cinematic traditions - narrative, documentary, and experimental forms. You will acquire a basic critical and aesthetic vocabulary relating to cinema as an art form, and a commercial practice. We evaluate genres, explore the impact of individual “auteurs” to the history of cinema, and look into the ramifications of technological innovations in film production.
