Straight, No Chaser: The World of Thelonious Monk

ID : 82152
« back to classes page
Jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk (1917-82) is the second-most recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington. This is somewhat astonishing, since Ellington wrote over 1,000 songs and Monk only wrote about 70. No matter whether he was playing cool jazz or hard bop, it was impossible to escape his unique style, which jazz critic Philip Larkin famously dismissed as “the elephant on the keyboard.” Although “Round Midnight” may be more familiar, his composition “Epistrophy” has been called "the first classic, modern jazz composition.”
