The first half of the twentieth century is heir to a rich operatic tradition of beautiful music and stirring melodrama.  And while there were practitioners of this style in the 20th century most composers preferred to break out in new directions.  In this class we shall explore the rich expressive potential of works from different countries. The operas to be covered via lecture, videos and discussion are: Richard Strauss, Salome, 1905, Alban Berg, Wozzeck, 1925, Giacomo Puccini, Turandot, 1926, Dimitri Shostakovich, Lady Macbeth of Mtensk, 1934, Benjamin Britten, Peter Grimes, 1945.
