Sadie Orchard said she came to New Mexico for adventure. And that’s exactly what she got. She would eventually own two brothels, is reputed to have been the only woman stagecoach driver in New Mexico Territory and operated the Orchard Grove Hotel. It was said she was an “unusually interesting person with a big heart,” and that was proven when she raised the money to build the first church in Kingston, and, later, cared for victims of the Spanish flu. Adventurous, interesting, big-hearted—that Sadie was quite a lady!
