The triangular fold harp is the emblem of four modern countries: Ireland, Wales, Pakistan, and.....Paraguay! The migration patterns of a people are expressed in their music, customs, dress, and other unique cultural items. The Celtic harp did not originate in the British Isles, nor did harps exist in Europe until the Renaissance, so where did they come from? Harps were nearly extinguished during the reign of Elizabeth I, as harpers came under threat of death to even own one. This lecture will explore the migration and development of the Celtic harp, and give attendees the opportunity to touch this wonderful instrument, and maybe cross it off their bucket list.
