« back to classes page
This lecture will introduce the Cult of Santa Muerte, survey its beliefs and practices and address its rapidly growing popularity. Over ten million people worldwide now practice this religious veneration of Death Herself, personified as a female Grim Reaper figure addressed in Spanish as "Santa Muerte," literally, "Saint Death." Called by descriptive names such as "The Skeleton Saint" and "The Skinny Lady," among others, she is revered in multiple colored forms and with a growing variety of rituals, traditions, and various folk religious practices. Many of these have their origins in folk Catholicism, others perhaps in indigenous Mexican religious forms, and still others in folk magic, sorcery and various esoteric beliefs. With her veneration branded heretical by the Roman Catholic Church, her devotees have continued worshiping her independently, originating a new religious movement which is now the fastest growing of any in North America and possibly the world, even making a cameo on the wildly popular TV series set in Albuquerque, Breaking Bad.
