“Dixie” was the most famous creation of the black face minstrel show, that peculiar 19th century American institution which dripped with racism and racial stereotype. It was the unofficial anthem of the Confederacy and by implication the defense of slavery and white supremacy. Yet it was also a favorite song of Abraham Lincoln and many who fought against slavery. It is loved and cherished by millions. The question -Does Dixie belong? - bumps into the question - Can it be excluded from the Great American Songbook? The romance of the “Lost Cause” will also be examined.
