Discuss the nature and history of art, then review the social and artistic conventions in place before Impressionism, sampling the Romantic and Realist movements. We'll study the revolutionary works of Manet before exploring the principles of Impressionism with an in-depth look at Monet. Enjoy the works of other Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, focusing on Renoir, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Seurat, Van Gogh, Gauguin and Cezanne. We will also cover their lives (sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic) and motivations. The knowledge and perspectives gained from the course will enhance students’ future experiences of all art styles and movements.
