The Pueblo Revolt of 1680

« back to classes page
The Revolt of the Pueblos in 1680 is significant not only in New Mexican history but it was also the most successful Indian revolt anywhere in the Americas against European rule prior to the eighteenth century Wars of Independence.  The Revolt raised profound questions about the viability of the Spanish Colonial enterprise.  The Revolt’s legacy is complex and contradictory. Since the Spanish authorities never actually saw Pueblo Revolt leader Popay, did he really exist or was he the clever product of the Pueblo counter-intelligence to hide the actual identities of the Revolt leaders?
