« back to classes page
From the 4th century CE, the quest for relics (tangible links to Jesus, Mary, the Apostles and early Christian martyrs) deepened the split between western and eastern Christianity and gave rise to the great pilgrimage sites of Jerusalem, Rome, Santiago de Compostela and Canterbury.  The quest also influenced the western artistic tradition from the creation of elaborate reliquaries to Gothic architecture and the santos of New Spain and the American Southwest.
