Reverse Engineering: Poems from the Inside Out

ID : 84041
« back to classes page
Reverse engineering is the processes of extracting knowledge or design information from a product and reproducing it based on the extracted information. What if we apply this concept to poetry? As poets, what can we learn through close, careful examination of the making of a poem? What will we discover as we attempt to imitate poets we admire? In this class, we’ll read a wide variety of contemporary multicultural poets and examine the style, technique and voice of each writer. After each group of readings, we will try our hand at imitating specific poetic strategies to broaden our understanding of poems from the inside out. Poems by Safia Elhillo, Terrance Hayes, Danez Smith, Nicole Sealey, Layli Long Soldier, Solmaz Sharif, Shane McCrae and many others will be studied.
