The 2018 Santa Fe Opera Season

This course will provide an introduction to this summer's productions at the Santa Fe Opera.  After a brief discussion of how a company puts a season together; and its artistic ambitions and budgetary concerns, we will watch videos of each opera, placing each work in its historical context and previewing its musical and dramatic qualities. The operas to be covered are: Rossini, The Italian Girl in Algiers, 1813; Puccini, Madame Butterfly, 1904; Strauss, Ariadne Auf Naxos, 1916; Bernstein, Candide, 1956; Adams, Doctor Atomic, 2005.
