Football first took hold of the American psyche in the 1870s, on the playing fields of Harvard and Yale. The game became increasingly popular as American industrialized. The NFL got its start in the 1920s, initially lagging far behind baseball and boxing in terms of popularity. But that all changed – today college and professional football dominate the American sports landscape, despite concerns about the NCAA and concussions. This course will be a lively discussion of how and why football has become America’s national pastime.
