The modern Pantoum is a poetic form that incorporates rhyme and the repetition of lines. Contemporary poets including Natalie Diaz, Evie Shockley, and Natasha Trethewey (former Poet Laureate of the United States) have written pantoums. Like a dance, the poet moves four steps forward and two steps back. Students will write a pantoum each week to better explore the possibilities of this poetic form. We will also read published pantoums and discuss how repetition adds to meaning. Students’ poems will be shared with the class and critiqued each week. Bring pen and paper to the first class.
