Diagnosis, Assessment and Treatment Planning

This course provides an orientation to the issues of diagnosis, assessment and treatment planning that are specific to substance abuse treatment. Diagnostic considerations include the spectrum of DSM substance use disorders, and use of SCID criteria in diagnosis. Valid instruments are introduced for assessing substance use, problems, and dependence, need for detoxification, and psychological dependence. Issues of client-treatment matching are considered, including the ASAM treatment placement criteria, and connecting clients with needed services in the community.
