Explore the part of the treatment continuum that entails universal, targeted, and indicated prevention. Evidence for what works in universal and targeted prevention is reviewed. Risk factors and early warning signs are presented, along with problem behavior theory and the inter-relationship of substance abuse with risk-taking behaviors. Public health education and effective school-based prevention approaches are discussed. Cultural considerations are explored.
