An introduction to the nature and treatment of mental health problems that frequently co-occur with substance use disorders. The prevalence and nature of common co-occurring disorders are reviewed.  Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) is presented as a comprehensive model for managing concomitant disorders.  Also reviewed are pharmacotherapies for mental disorders, case management, and methods for smoking cessation and infection risk reduction.
