MUS 435 Songwriting I. Taught by professor Kristina Jacobsen. Fall 2018, Wednesdays 5:30–8:00 pm, Albuquerque Press Club (201 Highland Park Circle, SE). This course explores the basic building blocks of writing original songs. Song form, chord progressions, music genre, lyrics, performance skills, and establishing good writing habits will be addressed. Students will complete weekly, incremental songwriting assignments and perform what they have written each week for the class; students will also perform in at least two public concerts. Numerous guest performances and masterclasses with local and national performing songwriters will also be offered. Class capped at 16 students. Students must have basic proficiency on an accompanying instrument (keyboard, guitar, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, etc.) and are expected to perform the songs they write. Open to music and non-music majors alike. No audits or pass/fails. Students will be admitted by instructor permission only.
