Libertarians and the Keynesian Progressives: Kissing Cousins?

ID : 84843
« back to classes page
What is frequently lost in the Washington vitriol is that the two major poles of the economic debate grew from the same liberal economic and philosophic traditions going back to John Locke and Adam Smith.  This was reinforced by John Maynard Keynes himself in a letter written to Friedrich Hayek in June 1944 after reading a copy of The Road to Serfdom that Hayek had sent him two months earlier.  The debate is not between the desirability of free markets or government intervention but where the line should be drawn between the two.  Recommended reading: Keynes Hayek: the Clash That Defined Modern Economics by Nicholas Wapshott.
