Esteban: The African Slave Who Explored America

ID : 85088
« back to classes page
Esteban was the first non-Indian to enter what is now Arizona and New Mexico, arriving in 1539. Conventional wisdom is that Zunis killed him that spring, but that is based only on assumptions and rumors. No European ever witnessed him being killed. The Mexican Indians with him didn't see it happen either. This nonfiction biography raises reasonable doubt about whether Zunis killed him, and it restores Esteban’s reputation and place in New Mexico's history. Esteban: The African Slave Who Explored America is published by University of New Mexico Press. Attendees will hear about this remarkable man who traveled across the continent but who has been mostly ignored and whose achievements have been often denigrated.
