The emphasis of this eight week course is on pottery as a process within the context of the potter's wheel and its relation to the body. This course will introduce basic concepts and processes of the potter's wheel: the creation of functional forms on the potter's wheel, trimming, wheel wedging, centering, relaxation, ceramic vocabulary, aesthetics; and glazing. Further, the course will help the student develop an appreciation of ceramic art within the community. This course will address several challenges involved with learning the potter's wheel: developing patience through practice and aesthetic innovation.

Aspects of beauty, quality, and functionality will be the driving aesthetic motivation. where a combination a student-centered approach to 'aesthetics' and a discipline based approach to 'creative process' result in the learning and expression pottery. Adopting 'economy' and 'efficiency' as a part of this art process is exercised in: reducing, reusing, and recycling when using creative energy, materials, and all resources in the studio. With the additional self-paced practice days, you can practice the things that are more difficult to each individual student. This enables you to develop at your own pace and in-depth, while being part of a broad topic of study.

All material, tools, and firings will be provided by the studio. Please remember to arrive promptly in closed toed shoes and clothes that you do not mind getting dirty.

Studio/Materials Fee $80 includes tools glazes and firings up to 20lbs finished works and free studio day.
