Ahlan wa Sahlan! Welcome! This course introduces you to the fifth-most spoken language in the world, one holding great significance to almost 2 billion Muslims worldwide. Considered a critical world language by agencies of the U.S. government, Arabic provides a key to understanding ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa, and it connects us to 4 million Arab-Americans, including Albuquerque’s thriving refugee and university-related populations. The course will focus on key conversational scenarios while introducing the alphabet and cultural considerations. At the end of the course, students will be able to communicate their basic needs in the Arab World. The instructor has worked for more than six years in the Middle East and has taught Arabic locally for more than eight years.

REQUIRED TEXT: Mastering Arabic I with 2 Audio CDs, 3rd Edition by Jane Wightwick and Mahmoud Gaafar (Hippocrene Books, Inc., ISBN 978-0781813389.
