The On-Going Struggle in Syria

« back to classes page

Syrian unrest, part of a broader surge in 2011 Arab Spring protests, grew out of discontent with the Assad government, escalating to an armed conflict after protests calling for removal met with violence from the regime. Is a peace deal possible or are we merely in a pause in a Middle Eastern “Thirty Years War” that pits all the major factions (Sunni vs Shia; US/Israel vs Iran/Russia/the Assad regime; authoritarian vs democratic opening; “moderates” vs hard core jihadists) in a decisive conflict? What role should the US take as the civilian death toll rises? Is there any acceptable resolution where the only potential alternative to Assad is a theocracy and further violence and repression?
