« back to classes page

We all think we know the story of Dr. Livingston.  He’s the doctor/missionary found in Africa by Henry Stanley who became famous for asking, "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"  But did you know that Livingston was looking for the mysterious source of the Nile?  That he futilely tried to end the Arab-Swahili slave trade? Or that Stanley also was searching for the source of the Nile and that his explorations enabled King Leopold II of Belgium to ravish what would become the Belgium Congo? There’s more to this story than a famous quote. Join us for events as dark as “darkest Africa ” – another phrase coined by Stanley.
