Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost. ~ Thomas Jefferson
The Fourth Estate refers to any entity that influences public thought and acts as a check to the authority of the three branches of government. Bloggers, internet news, pseudo-news and advertising absorbs much of the modern media sphere. More individuals, especially those under forty, are getting their news somewhere other than the traditional journalistic sources. Our nation has been shaped by high-quality investigative journalism and a free press is as important to the health of democracy today as ever. It’s ironic that according to a 2016 Gallup poll, only a third of Americans trust the free press. Explore how we arrived at this place and the future of the Fourth Estate with Gene Grant, Host of New Mexico in Focus.
