On his epitaph, Thomas Jefferson wanted the following to be written: "He was the first governor of Virginia, the founder of the doctrine of religious tolerance, the author of the Louisiana Purchase and the founder of the University of Virginia." The reader will please note the glaring omission that he also happened to be the third president of the United States. He is known as a champion of personal freedoms, yet owned over two hundred slaves during his lifetime. He suffered from debilitating migraine headaches and often questioned his own rational thinking. It will also be noted that he and his arch political rival, John Adams, died on the same day, July 4th, 1826, precisely fifty years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Please come and examine with us the astounding and conflicted life of this extraordinary man.
