The Importance of Creating Ceremony

« back to classes page
Come discuss how ceremonies and rituals belong to us ourselves. We all take part in ceremonies: Thanksgiving, holiday traditions, birthdays, “celebration of life” for loved ones. Ceremony provides an outward, visible sign of a particular event. Graduation, marriage, and childbirth are marked with ceremony. Initiations (beginning anew) range from first grade to Scouting to parenting to retirement. Ritual is deeper: the purpose of ritual is to feel the great tides moving through us. Formal rituals transform us from the mundane into sacred time and space. Rites of passage are celebrated worldwide and have three phases: separation from a known status, transition according to a traditional sequence, and taking on a new status. Examples are Bar/Bat Mitzvah and Quinceañera. Please share your experiences and thoughts about ceremonies and rituals!
