Did the magnificent sky above “instruct” prehistoric people below how to design their huge megalithic stone structures? Were they duplicating on earth what they saw in the night sky? The Neolithic people of 5000 years ago in Europe were brilliant astronomers. Many megalithic structures were oriented to the sun – to the solstices and equinoxes. Some were oriented to the moon – to its most northern and southern risings and settings over the years. Fewer were oriented to major stars and constellations. As ritual centers, all of these stone temples anchored every activity of those people. Together, we will grasp the practices of astronomy and ceremony imbedded in the stones of ancient Neolithic sites in Europe.
