« back to classes page
Our well-being is strongly influenced both by our happiness and by the nature of the community and society in which we live.   We will examine the happiness skills we have and will use exercises to develop other such skills.   We will also explore how communities and countries promote happiness through conscious policies and practices. We will study Bhutan, which systematically measures the Gross National Happiness of its citizens and uses that information to guide Bhutanese development decisions. The dimensions contributing to happiness measured in Bhutan include physical and mental health, psychological well-being, cultural vitality, material well-being and governance. We’ll explore how these dimensions seek to contribute to the happiness of Bhutanese, and see if they are relevant in our society.  (Indeed this happiness focus is now being promoted by the United Nations!) Your instructors are Steve Poland and Roger Harmon. Steve is a psychologist who is committed to spreading the insights of positive psychology to daily life. He teaches Osher classes on flourishing and resilience.  Roger, an applied cultural anthropologist, has   led eight trips to Bhutan in recent years.  He will share photographs and stories of life and change in Bhutan and elsewhere.
