« back to classes page

The 1917 Russian Revolution brought crimes, terror, repression. In 1917, the Cheka (secret police) was formed; in 1918 the Red Terror began. There followed imprisonment and hostage taking; executions, without trial; state-inflicted-famines; forced collectivization; concentration camps (yes, before the Nazis); labor camps; deportation of ethnic groups; Great Purge of 1937-1938; Katyn massacre of Polish officers . . . Estimated total deaths: 20 million. We’ll study this with YouTube videos corroborated by The Black Book of Communism, The Gulag Archipelago, and Harvest of Sorrow. Videos include “The Secret Lenin,” “Norilsk Labor Complex,” “Butovo Killing Field,” “Forced Relocation of Crimean Tatars,” and “The Infamous Moscow Show Trial.”
